Abstract

Pitfall traps were used to monitor and compare the 1994 seasonal abundance of ground-dwelling arthropods in one 50 acre conservation tillcd crimson clover/cotton field and one 50 acre conventionallv tilled cotton field in Dooly county, near Vienna Georgia Four 16 oz pitfall traps in five locations (N= (20) were monitored and changed weekly in each field. Commonly collected arthropods included two species of Collembola, Bourletiella hortensis (Fitch)(Sminthuridae) and Podura aquatica Linnaeus (Poduridae), the striped earwig Labidura riparia (Pallus), the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and 28 species of carabid beetles in 17 genera In addition, predatory beetles in four other families including Notoxus monodon (Anthicidae), 9 species of staphylillid beetles in 6 genera one Pedilid and two Cicindelids, Megacephala carolina and Circindela nr sexguttata. were also common. Other abundant arlhropods included eleven species of spiders in six genera, consisting mainly of two wolf spiders in the genus Pardosa and the striped lynx spidcr, Oxyopes salticus Hientz, and one species of centipede nr Lithobius forficatus.
