Answer to Risk Index Exercise 1

Numbers in parentheses indicate the index value associated with that particular factor.

Answer 1: Planting Georgia Green (20) during the second week of May (5) with a population of 5 plants per foot of row (5) without phorate (15) but with twin row pattern (5) and with strip tillage (5) would give her an index total of 55 points which places her well within the Low Risk Category. Planting Georgia Green (20) during the second week of May (5) with a population of 5 plants per foot of row (5) with phorate (5) but with single row pattern (15) and conventional tillage (15) would give her an index total of 65 points, which still places her in the Low Risk Category, but at a slightly higher risk than with her new system. Therefore, for management of spotted wilt, she would probably be better off to go with the twin rows and strip tillage and not apply the phorate.
Good Luck!
